Years of history and education
The story of Ijebu-Jesa Grammar School is one of resilience, community spirit, and an unwavering belief in the transformative power of education. Since 1955, the school has stood as a beacon of academic excellence, character development, and leadership, producing generations of alumni who continue to make meaningful contributions across Nigeria and the world.
The Dream Begins (1936)
The vision for Ijebu-Jesa Grammar School was conceived in 1936 by the Ijebu-Jesa Union Conference (IJUC). Community leaders recognized the growing need for a secondary school that would provide quality education for children within Ijebu-Jesa, eliminating the barriers many faced in gaining admission to schools outside the town.
Driven by a shared commitment to education, the Union mobilized traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents to support the establishment of what would become one of the region’s most respected institutions.
Perseverance Through Challenges
Progress toward establishing the school faced significant setbacks following the passing of Oba Amolese I in 1946, leading to delays in the project.
Despite these challenges, the community remained steadfast. Their determination ensured that the vision endured, laying the groundwork for the school’s eventual establishment.
Opening the Doors to Excellence
In 1954, a reconstituted Education Committee led by Mr. J. A. Osanyin (Chairman) and Mr. P. O. Orunmuyi (Secretary) finalized plans for the school.
After securing land and obtaining approval from the Director of Education for the Western Region of Nigeria, Ijebu-Jesa Grammar School officially opened on 18 January 1955.
The school’s first Principal, Mr. C. O. Komolafe, seconded from Ilesa Grammar School, welcomed the inaugural class and laid the foundation for a tradition of academic excellence and discipline.
Growing Through the Decades
From its humble beginnings as a single-stream secondary school, Ijebu-Jesa Grammar School steadily expanded in both size and reputation.
Over the years, the administration of the school transitioned through the governments of the Western Region, Western State, Oyo State, and now Osun State. Throughout these changes, the school’s commitment to excellence remained unwavering.
By 2003, the institution had produced over 11,700 graduates, many of whom have excelled in medicine, engineering, law, academia, banking, business, public service, and entrepreneurship.
Today, the school continues to nurture future generations while remaining firmly rooted in the values upon which it was founded.
The Role of IJGSOSA
The continued success of Ijebu-Jesa Grammar School has been strengthened by the unwavering commitment of its alumni through the Ijebu-Jesa Grammar School Old Students’ Association (IJGSOSA).
Working alongside the Parents Teachers Association and other stakeholders, IJGSOSA has consistently supported projects that improve learning conditions and preserve the school’s legacy.
Some notable contributions include:
- Development of water and sanitation facilities.
- Provision of books and journals for the school library.
- Support for school security.
- Employment and sponsorship of teaching staff during periods of shortage.
- Funding and execution of emergency infrastructure projects.
The Association remains committed to ensuring that future generations enjoy an even stronger educational environment.
A Living Legacy
More than seventy years after its establishment, Ijebu-Jesa Grammar School continues to stand as a symbol of academic excellence, discipline, service, and community pride.
Its story is still being written—by every student, every teacher, every alumnus, and every supporter who believes in the enduring power of education.

1970s — PTA donated the school’s first Bedford lorry.
